Custom Ceremony of Rebo Pungkasan

Ceremony of Rebo Pungkasan is custom ceremony in Wonokromo village, Plered sub district, Bantul regency. It is 10 kilometers south of Yogyakarta City center. The ceremony is called Rebo Pungkasan or Rebo Wekasan because it is held on last Wednesday on month of Sapar. The word of Sapar is coherence with Arabic word of syafar, which becomes second month in Javanese’s month. The top of ceremony comes on Tuesday night or night before Wednesday.

Formerly, this ceremony was centered in front of mosque and generally, before a week of the top ceremony, there had been merry-go-round. But, time to time the activity becomes much more live, so it disturbs the praying activity at the mosque. Thus, head of Wonokromo village ordered to move the activity to in front of village hall, at Wonokromo square.

The ceremony is held on Wednesday. Some people say that the last Wednesday on month of Sapar is a meeting day between Sri Sultan HB I with mBah Kyai Faqih Usman. Based on that day, people name it Rebo Wekasan or Rebo Pungkasan ceremony. The ceremony is done as thank God manifestation.

In welcoming the ceremony, a week before the top of ceremony, there had been game stands, such as ombak banyu, tram, dremolem (merry-go-round) and so on. Then, there was night market, like sekaten. There were shops, which sold clothes, foods, toys and so on. Giant lemper (2.5 meters with 45 centimeters diameter) convoy was the top of ceremony. The lemper was brought from Wonokromo mosque to Wonokromo village hall, 2 kilometers distance. This convoy was started with the march of Ngayogyakarta Palace soldiers, followed by artificial giant lemper, which was brought by 4 persons, followed with 40 centimeters and 15 centimeters long lemper. Behind the lemper convoy, there were local arts group convoy, such as Shalawatan, Kubrosiswo, Rodat and so on.

After the activity, there was giant lemper cutting, done by high officers, which was as the top of that activity. The lemper was given to invited guests and visitors. Committee made other lemper to cover if there were persons who did not get the lemper. Gunungan (kinds of foods and fruits arranged like a mountain), which was brought, was then cut and given to the visitors to be scrambled. Then, the ceremony of Rebo Pungkasan finished, but the stands were still running for a week.
