Tanjan - Teak Door Craft Center

The nature gives us all we need, such as food, clothes and dwelling place that all is from nature. We should not only use all that nature resources, but we must also maintain the nature, so it won’t be extinct and our next generation can also use it all. Tanjan sub village, which is located in Temuwuh village, Dlingo, Bantul, about 21 kilometers southeast of Yogyakarta City, also applies this system. Besides using teak trees, people have to maintain it. “A person, who cut a teak tree down, that person has to plant at least 2 teak trees. It is done to make the teak trees are not going to be extinct, because the trees are very important material to make door,“ Wito Sentono, the head of sub village says.

In this cluster of hamlet, which consists of 85 heads of family, 90% of them work as door craft maker. Teens, who are still studying, have been skilled-well to make the door. They make the door after they back from school. “At least, it can be taken as a part time work, and I can get extra money from it. Actually, besides as door craft center, this sub village is also as coal producer, because the unused teaks are used as coal,” Fakih (33) one of door craft maker says. When reporter of Bantulbiz.com asks him why the unused teaks are not used to make other craft, he answers, “In this time, we can’t do that because we have felt busy to serve door craft orders.”

Crafters from Tanjan have produced various models of door, from usual model to European’s style model. The price ranges Rp 150.000,- to Rp 2.5 millions, depends on model, measurement and material that is used. In a month, the crafters can produce 20 usual model doors. They get the material from near surrounding and Gunung Kidul area. The crafters usually buy the teak from the farmer immediately. “We buy the teaks by applying knowledge of estimation, because there is no standard to buy the teak tree. If the farmer needs money, the price will be cheap,” Sularto says to reporter of Bantulbiz.com in his working place.

Up till now, door products made by crafters from Tanjan have spread to Banyuwangi, Madura, Tuban, Jakarta, Kendal, Pekalongan, Jepara, Surabaya and it has even spread to America. The doors are usually sold in half (only need to paint), but sometime crafters sell it in a complete door, depends on demand and buyers.
