Mataram King’s cemetery in Imogiri district is the trademark of Bantul in tourism world. On a way go to the ancient cemetery, the visitors can still enjoy the culture tourism-object which keeps long history, more over 300 years. It is, Banyusumurup village which is located about 2 kilometers south of the Mataram King’s cemetery.


In this village, there are almost 200 craft workers who has been expert to make keris (wavy double-bladed dagger). But, from many craft workers, there is only one person who can make patrimony keris or powerful keris because the keris is believed has mystic power, which can be filled with magic-charms. The patrimony keris has function as safety, status, authority and even any keris which can be filled with anti ‘santet’ (Javanese terms means black-magic). The filling of power depends on the candidate owner. The keris maker only makes keris for art performance, like dancing, ‘campursari’ music, and marriage costume or just for decoration.


The only one of patrimony keris art worker is Jiwo Dihardjo, 68 years. Sri Sultan HB IX deceased dub Mbah Jiwo as Mpu Sarjono Supo, in 1982, after finishing ‘kerangka’ (part of keris) full with diamond of keris which was ordered by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX.

The long history began 300 years ago, when Majapahit was in war. One of keris experts, Tomorejo, escaped from Pasuruan to Yogyakarta and stayed at Banyusumurup at last. Mpu Sarjono Supo is the fifth generation of Mpu Tomo.

The powerful and high-quality keris of Mpu Supo’s work is about Rp. 2 million up to Rp. 12 million per keris. While from other craft workers are only Rp. 25.000 up to Rp. 250.000 per keris. Why other craft workers do not make the patrimony keris? It needs big capital, and very hard qualification, likes 2 days and 2 nights walking without stopping, no sleeping during 2 days and 2 nights, no speaking during 2 days and 2 nights. How is the result? It is so amazing. Mpu Sarjono appeals, “ No body is allowed to take the craft worker’s picture when the craft workers are filling the magic-charms in the keris”.
