Though located on mountain area, south of Yogyakarta, Pocung has been known well throughout. This because that leather carved crafting center of Pocung supports Yogyakarta Palace to maintain leather puppet, beside that the production brings the arts aspect in its carved. Pocung is famous cause of the well skilled worker in tatah sungging field.


From 230 head of families or about 800 people who stay in Karangasem sub village, almost 80 % live as craft workers. Pocung, which is located 15 kilometers southwest of Yogyakarta is the sub district which is now replaced with Wukirsari sub district which consist of 4 sub villages, as follows: Karangasem, Dengkeng, Jatirejo and Karang talon. According to Suyono, the chief of “paguyuban” (group of people) of leather crafter of Pocung, the expertise of the craft workers comes from hereditary from ‘Mbah’ (nick name for Grandpa’) Gembloh, who is Yogyakarta palace servant. Almost all of tatah sungging crafter in Pocung is local people that are valuable asset for its survival to the center of tatah sungging of Pocung.

The craft workers do more than Rp 100 millions orders every month, both from domestic and foreign countries. The product such as puppets, lamp cup, candle cup, the buyers who come immediately order mascot, paper border, calligraphy, frame and souvenir. The buyers can also buy at the Art Shops at Yogyakarta and Bali, Jakarta and other big cities. They can also order through phone as the communication or immediately visit Pocung. According to Suyono, ‘BINA SWADAYA’ from Banguntapan will aid capital to them.

The market system has been done with the help of APIKRI, PT Hari Handicraft at Yogyakarta. Tourist or buyers who visit Pocung will pass by natural village before they arrive at this leather carved center. Tourist can immediately watch the process of traditional leather carved making (had made), and talk with crafter who will serve to answer all their curiosity. Mountain area will lead them to enjoy the attractive journey, beside the street is twisty and good condition yet.

The satisfaction of tourism journey will be more attractive if the journey go immediately to the keris craft center at Banyusumurup. They should visit to Empu Supo, man who creates powerful magic keris or to the common ornamented keris crafter houses. Tourist can also visit the king’s cemetery of Mataram, Seniman cemetery or do the cure of Gurah (cure to make the voice become clearer and help to erase dirties in lungs). All of the location is located in one place at Imogiri district, Bantul regency.
